The skin of a naive beginner rider's thighs depend on your expertise.

Kinja'd!!!

Before you read this... yes, it will make you cringe.

If I stick unmuffled straight pipes in such a position that my thighs touch them*, I suspect they will become hot enough to cause harm to me? If so, would wrapping them in large amounts of bicycle handlebar tape in that spot make it OK? If not... if I drilled holes in the pipes close to where they come out of the engine, would that decrease the heat around my legs? A combination of these two, perhaps?

Uhhhhh, yes it would burn you. A lot.

Bicycle handlebar tape would probably not make it better, you'd have to stick exhaust wrap on it and that would look rather crappy.

Absolutely, they will burn the shit out of you. Exhaust exits the engine at commonly well over 600 degrees F. Handlebar tape will dry out, crack, and get weird at those temps, too. Holes in the pipes will not help, will increase noise, and lead to the possibility of you gassing yourself.

In a word, No to both of your ideas.

1) Get some riding gear so your thighs don't touch the bike.

2) Get a proper exhaust, you shouldn't come into contact with exhaust during normal riding

3) Drilling wholes in the exhaust near the block will just make the bike run like crap and be really loud. You would still be burnt.

.....oh god.... I dont even know where to start....

1: handle bar tape...REALLY?!?!?!?! Dude, that shit is going to catch fire. Your thinking of heat wrap...which is NOT the same thing

2: NO its not going to do jack shit! It might take a longer to heat up, but eventually thats shit is going to get hot and burn you (yes, through your riding jeans...you ARE wearing gear, right?!)

3: holes near the valves? dude....just. god dam.

I try to be one of the more 'level' headed when it comes to mods and stuff people do to their own cars/bikes....

this has got to be the stupidest thing I've ever read.

Yeah, no, there may be some sort of insulator that will handle that heat but it will A) look terrible and there's no "B."

The only rules of handlebar tape are these: 1) Be cork. 2) Don't place it on anything that's not a bicycle.

Pointus Tertius: I've never seen pipes that would come into contact with your thighs. Is this a super low-rider? Are you bending these back in unnatural fashion so that they don't travel toward the bottom of the bike before proceeding rearward? Also, you're planning on always wearing cotton and/or leather on your legs, correct?

Cool picture, btw. I like how the only suspended thing here is the engine. The other shock absorber is your spine. That saddle is cracking me up even now. It's just steel painted to look like leather I think. Aesthetics are all-important.

With all due respect, "it's for aesthetics!" has NO business being a reason to contemplate how badly you're going to burn your inner thighs, and/or put yourself in the running for a Darwin award.

This is a 1968 Triumph Scrambler, very much like the one my dad had when I was a kid. http://triumphmotorcycles.typepad.com/.a/6a00d834537…

Notice the position of the pipes. What you will not notice is the burn scar on the inside of my right knee the mirrors exactly where those pipes sit in relation to my leg. Me, being the short pants wearing child genius that I was when I was, decided to go hop on dad's bike right after he got back from a nice long ride. Long story short. Don't do it dumbass!

A: an exhaust pipe without a heat shield will BURN YOU.

B: handle-bar tape is not high-heat rated, the material, or the adhesive could start a fire, DO NOT DO THIS. B2: handle bar tape and exhaust wrap are NOT AT ALL the same thing.

C: if the exhaust is that close to your leg, what else is it close to? the fuel petcock? the wiring harness? the battery? High exhaust routing is not common, because it is more sophisticated, and needs to be well engineered for the WHOLE BIKE.

D: drilling holes in the exhaust near the cylinder head will HURT the engine's performance, the exhausts efficiency, and could cause heat problems elsewhere, and may not reduce the heat of the metal in the exhaust system much anyway. DO NOT DO THIS

E: if you are un-familiar with motorcycle mechanics, I would suggest consulting a local mechanic or customizer, and ask their suggestion about exhaust wrap and/or heat shielding for a high-level exhaust system, as well as making sure it is not going to make the motorcycle unsafe.

On a similar note, is it alright if I cut a hole in my firewall and have exhaust headers that act as seat bolsters? And if I wrap them in Saran wrap and wait for them to develop an exhaust leak will it not burn me as badly? It's for aesthetics.

I'm not convinced that Raphy isn't trolling here.

If he's not, he shouldn't be allowed near a motorcycle. Either that, or, the next time someone asks such a question, we should simply tell them that it is a wonderful idea and they should do it right away.
